• Kofi Annan will be visiting Sri Lanka in February, the first for a U.N. Secretary-General in 35 years. He will be accompanied in his visit to rebellious Tamil territory in Jaffna by Foreign minister Tyronne Fernando. Incidently, Mr. Fernando had announced his personal interest in succeeding Mr. Annan.

• The Executive Board of the World Health Organization will review the nine official candidates for the post of Director General late in January. A short list or one candidate will then be submitted to its Assembly next May.
