- Secretary General Kofi Annan is expected to visit Moscow
mid-May where he is likely to receive public endorsement
for a renewed term when meeting Russian President Putin
and other senior officials. It may be an opportunity to
name some Russian candidates for an Under Secretary General
post next year.
- Before the Committee on Information meets in early May,
it hopes to resolve the question of its forthcoming chairmanship.
In normal rotation it will be Latin America and the Caribbean
region that should field a candidate.
- The Executive Committee of E.S.C.W.A., the UN Economic
and Social Commission for Western Asia will meet in early
May. That will be the first meeting with the new Executive
Secretary Ambassador Mervat Tallawy.
